disintegrate
brief: create a film that visually communicates the technical workflow and the thematic inspirations of the innovative and environmentally conscious music project by london-born composer nicholas thayer.
the initial motivation for the film was to communicate the intricate technical workings as well as the motivations and aspirations of the project.
target audience were first and foremost potential benefactors and cultural programmers. the composer aims to have this project be performed in various versions at various venues – both interior and exterior.
the film therefor had to achieve two narrative lines;
it had to visually narrate how the project works; how a melting block of ice can in fact become the technical heart of a performance. to do this, black and white cinematography emphasize the core tenets of the project: the ice, the harp, the electronics, the dance, and the melt water.
through interviews the film lets the composer and one of the collaborators explain in depth the creative process, as well as the motivations and goals of the project.
tying it together is footage of the ice block structure in the natural landscape; with the image of the ice block standing in the rising tide an all encompassing metaphor for what the project aims to address, discuss, and lament.
